Role of AI in healthcare and the importance of oversight for AI healthcare tools

According to the the latest FIP’s International Pharmacy Journal, a recent study published in Radiology evaluated the accuracy of health information provided by ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot. While the chatbot showed potential in providing accurate information to patients about breast cancer prevention and screening, the study also found some inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the responses

Researchers at the University of Maryland tested the chatbot with 25 questions about breast cancer screening, and found that responses to 22 questions were appropriate, citing recommendations from the American Cancer Society. However, one question was answered incorrectly with outdated information, and two questions had inconsistent responses that varied significantly each time they were posed.

The researchers noted that while ChatGPT has the benefit of summarizing information into an easily digestible form for consumers, its responses are not as comprehensive as those found through a Google search. They concluded that while ChatGPT has great potential to provide accurate healthcare information, oversight is critical to ensure inappropriate and inconsistent responses are minimized.

While technology has the potential to automate the provision of healthcare information, it’s important to ensure that patients receive accurate and comprehensive information to make informed decisions about their health.
